Canthal tilt is the angle between your inner and outer eye corners, compared with a level line. You can measure it on a straight-on photo with a protractor app in about two minutes. Above about +5 degrees counts as positive, 0 to +5 as neutral, and below 0 as negative. Published averages sit around +4 to +8 degrees. This page shows the steps, the bands, and what does and does not change your tilt. In the Lookist app, your report scores your eyes and eye brightness with written notes.

How to measure canthal tilt on a photo

You need one straight-on photo and an app that measures angles. Many photo editors and protractor apps can draw a line and show its angle. Take your time on the corners, because the bands are only a few degrees wide.

  1. Take a photo at eye level, an arm's length away, with relaxed open eyes. Do not squint or smile.
  2. Zoom in and draw a straight line through both inner eye corners. This is your reference line.
  3. If the reference line is not level, your head was tilted. Rotate the photo until that line is level.
  4. Draw a line from the inner corner to the outer corner of one eye.
  5. Read the angle between that line and the reference line. If the outer corner is higher, the angle is positive.
  6. Repeat for the other eye, then average the two.
  7. Match your average to the bands table below. Take two more photos and check that you get a similar number.

Canthal tilt: negative vs. positive

What canthal tilt is

The canthi are the corners of the eye where the upper and lower eyelids meet. The medial canthus is the inner corner, near your nose. The lateral canthus is the outer corner. Canthal tilt is the angle of the line between them, compared with a horizontal line.

Positive canthal tilt

The outer corner sits higher than the inner corner, so the eye angles up toward the temple. A mild positive tilt is very common. In looksmaxxing forums, positive tilt is often linked to the idea of hunter eyes.

Neutral canthal tilt

The two corners sit at about the same height, so the eye looks level. Anything from 0° to 5° is usually called neutral.

Negative canthal tilt

The outer corner sits lower than the inner corner, so the eye angles down toward the temple. A clearly negative tilt is uncommon in published adult samples. Looking tired, a droopy lower lid, or a head tilted down in the photo can make a tilt look more negative than it is.

Each eye on its own

Your two eyes rarely match exactly. Measure each one, then average them for the overall band. A difference of a degree or two between eyes is normal.

Canthal tilt bands and the published range

The bands come from a 2020 study by Lee, Choung and Choung, which sorted canthal tilt into three classes. We use the same edges.

That study measured standardized frontal photos of 76 patients aged 13 to 38 at a Korean dental hospital. They had come in about facial asymmetry. The average tilt was 8.45° for the right eye and 8.42° for the left, with a spread of about 3.5° either way. Nobody in the group had a negative tilt. Treat these as one published sample, not a global norm, because tilt varies with ancestry, age and how the corners are marked.

Different studies and tools mark the corners in slightly different places, so their numbers do not always line up. Compare your own photos measured the same way rather than numbers from different tools.

Above +5°PositiveOuter corner clearly higher than the inner corner. Class II in Lee et al. (2020).
0° to +5°NeutralCorners close to level, with the outer corner the same height or slightly higher. Class I.
Below 0°NegativeOuter corner lower than the inner corner. Class III.

Canthal tilt, hunter eyes and what else shapes your eyes

Canthal tilt gets a lot of attention online, but it's one of several things that decide how your eyes look. Forums often roll several of them into the phrase hunter eyes.

Upper eyelid show

How much of the upper lid you can see when your eyes are open. Less lid show, with the brow sitting close to the eye, gives the deep-set look that forums call hunter eyes. A positive tilt with a lot of lid show looks quite different.

Brow position

A low, straight brow shades the eye and makes the eye area look more intense. A high, arched brow opens it up. Brow grooming changes this more than anything else you can do at home.

Lower eyelid and under-eye area

Puffy or dark under-eyes, and a lower lid that dips in the middle, can make the outer corner look lower than it measures. Sleep, allergies and fluid retention change this from day to day.

Eye shape and spacing

Almond-shaped eyes and round eyes with the same tilt look different. Wide-set and close-set eyes change the overall look too.

How canthal tilt differs by sex, age and ancestry

There is no single normal number. A 2023 study of 42 faces chosen as attractive measured an average tilt of about 6.5 degrees in men and 8.5 degrees in women. Other samples report averages from about 4 to 8 degrees. Women tend to have a slightly more positive tilt than men on average, and many East Asian samples report higher averages than European ones.

Age changes the eye area more than the tilt itself. A 1999 study of eyelid anatomy found that the outer corner of the eye stays fairly stable with age, while the lids and the skin around them change. Puffier lower lids, hooding of the upper lid and lower brows make the eye look like it angles down more, even when the corners have barely moved.

That is why you should compare your tilt with your own earlier photos rather than with a number from a forum. Two people with the same angle can have eyes that look very different.

What changes canthal tilt and what does not

Your eye corners are held by bone and tendons, so routines do not move them. What changes day to day is how the eye area looks around the corners.

Hunter eyes: what they are

How Lookist scores your eye area

The Lookist app does not give a canthal tilt in degrees. It scores your eyes and your eye brightness, each with a written note, as part of 15 feature scores and an overall score out of 10.

Those two scores cover the parts of the eye area you can actually change: tired, puffy or dull-looking eyes. Your daily glow-up plan includes sleep reminders and skin care tasks, and scan history lets you compare photos taken the same way over time.

What your face score means

Limitations of canthal tilt from a photo

A photo is a flat picture of a curved face. If your head is turned, the far eye looks shorter and its angle changes. If your chin is up or down, both corners move.

Eyelids move. Squinting, smiling, tired eyes and even allergies change where the corners sit. Makeup like winged liner changes how the tilt looks without changing the corner itself.

A photo measurement is not a clinical exam. On narrow or hooded eyes the exact corner is hard to see. For any medical question about your eyelids, see an eye doctor or oculoplastic surgeon, who measures in person.

Canthal tilt is one small detail of a face. A negative tilt is not a flaw. The number describes geometry, not your worth.

Why your face looks different in selfies

Tips for an accurate canthal tilt reading

The eye corners are tiny targets, so small photo changes move the angle.

  • Look straight into the lens with relaxed, open eyes. Don't squint or widen them.
  • Keep your chin level. A raised chin makes the tilt look more positive, and a lowered chin makes it look more negative.
  • Take off glasses. Frames and reflections hide the corners.
  • Use soft light from the front. Shadows in the eye corners hide the exact point.
  • Hold the phone at eye level and an arm's length away, or further.
  • Take three photos and compare. If they vary by a degree or two, use the middle one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal canthal tilt?

Most adults have a neutral to mildly positive tilt. In the 2020 Lee study of 76 patients, the average was about 8.4°, and nobody had a negative tilt. Different studies mark the corners differently, so compare your own photos measured the same way over time.

What canthal tilt is hunter eyes?

Hunter eyes is forum slang, not a medical term. People use it for eyes with a positive tilt, a low upper-eyelid show and a strong brow. There's no agreed number, but forums usually point to a clearly positive tilt, above about 5°. Tilt alone doesn't make hunter eyes.

What is the most common canthal tilt?

Slightly positive. The outer eye corner usually sits a little higher than the inner one. Exact averages depend on the study group and how the corners are marked.

Does canthal tilt change as you age?

It can. The tissues that hold the outer eye corner can loosen with age, which can lower the outer corner a little and reduce the tilt. Sun damage, eye rubbing and weight changes around the eyes can also change how the corner looks.

Is it possible to get a positive canthal tilt?

Your bone and tendon structure doesn't change with exercises, and there's no evidence that eye or face exercises change canthal tilt. Surgery called canthoplasty can change the outer corner, but it has real risks, so talk to a qualified oculoplastic surgeon. Makeup and brow shaping change how the eye looks without surgery.

Is negative canthal tilt bad?

No. It's a description of an angle, not a health problem or a flaw. If one eye has changed shape recently, or your lower eyelid pulls away from the eye, see an eye doctor.

Why are my two eyes different?

Faces aren't perfectly symmetric, and a degree or two between eyes is normal. A small head turn also makes the two eyes measure differently. Retake the photo straight on to check.

How do I measure canthal tilt myself?

Draw a line through both inner eye corners on a straight-on photo and rotate the photo until it is level. Then draw a line from the inner to the outer corner of each eye and read its angle. Average the two eyes.

Does Lookist measure canthal tilt?

Not in degrees. Lookist scores your eyes and eye brightness with written notes, as part of 15 feature scores and an overall score out of 10. Use the steps on this page for the angle itself.

Why does my tilt look different in the mirror?

A mirror swaps left and right, which changes which eye is which but not the angle. What changes the look is light, your expression and how you hold your head. On a photo you can rotate the image until your inner corners are level, which a mirror cannot do.
