Want to fix their jawline, the top worry
- The average face score is 5.6 out of 10. The median is 5.4. Half of all people scored between 5.0 and 6.1.
- Nobody scored 8 or higher. Only 3.8% scored 7 or higher. The highest score in the data is 7.7.
- A score of 6.5 or higher puts a face in the top 10%.
- Jawline is the most common worry (70% of people) and the lowest-scoring feature (5.0).
- Symmetry is the highest-scoring feature (6.2), but 62% of men list it as a worry.
- Skin differs most from person to person. Skin clarity has more than twice the spread of symmetry.
- 45% of people rate their own looks within one point of their scan. Everyone who rated themselves 4 or lower scored higher than that.
- 65% say not knowing what to do is what holds them back.
The average face score is 5.6 out of 10
Across the first scans of 312 people, the mean face score is 5.6 and the median is 5.4. Scores bunch tightly around the middle. Half of all people sit between 5.0 and 6.1, and 53% land somewhere in the 5s.
So a 5 is not a bad score. It is the most common score. On this scale, 5.5 is the middle of the pack.

| 5.0 to 5.9 | 52.9% |
| 6.0 to 6.9 | 24.4% |

Why nobody scores 8, 9 or 10
Nobody in the data scored 8 or higher, and the top score is 7.7. That is not because the faces were unattractive. The overall score combines 15 features, and almost every face has a mix of strong and weak ones. On average, a person's best feature scores 2.1 points higher than their weakest one. The weak features pull the total back toward the middle.
So a 10 out of 10 face would need to be near the top on all 15 features at once. In 312 people, nobody was. If an app hands out 9s and 10s to most people, the scale is not telling you much.
All 15 features, ranked by average score
Symmetry scores highest on average (6.2). Jawline scores lowest (5.0). The features you can change with care, like skin, eye brightness and hair, are shown in orange.

Jawline: the top worry and the lowest score
70% of people list their jawline as something they want to fix. It is the most common worry for men and for women. The scans agree. Jawline has the lowest average of all 15 features (5.0), and it is the weakest feature for 23% of people, more than any other.
The most common specific complaint is a jaw that is "not defined enough". Bone sets the frame, but body fat, posture and the angle of the photo also change how defined a jaw looks. Those parts can change.
Symmetry: a big worry, the best score
62% of men say facial symmetry is a worry. Yet symmetry has the highest average of all 15 features (6.2) and the smallest spread between people. It is the best feature for 31% of people.
Most faces are close to symmetrical, and small differences are normal. People notice their own asymmetry because they look at their face from a few inches away, in a flipped mirror image.
Skin: where faces differ most
Bone structure scores sit close together from person to person. Skin does not. Skin clarity has a spread (standard deviation) of 1.24 points, more than twice the 0.56 of symmetry. Skin clarity is also the weakest feature for 22% of people, second only to jawline.
That is good news. Skin is the part of a face score that a routine can move. Clear skin, even tone and a healthy glow separate faces more than nose or forehead shape do.
Do people rate their own looks correctly?
Before their scan, people rated their own looks from 0 to 10. For 45%, the scan landed within one point of their own rating. For 28%, the scan was at least one point higher. For 27%, it was at least one point lower.
The harshest self-critics were the most wrong. 26% of people rated themselves 4 or lower. Every one of them scored higher than their own rating.
People want a 9.0. The median face scores 5.4.
We asked people what score they want to reach. The median answer is 9.0. 83% want an 8 or higher, and 30% want a perfect 10. In the scan data, nobody reached 8.
A realistic goal is a gain of a point or less, in the features that can change. Most people (46%) say they want "a noticeable change", not a total one.
What people want to fix
In 1,100 onboarding answers, the average person picked 4 areas they want to improve. Men and women chose from slightly different lists.
The ten most common specific worries, by number of people:
- Jawline: Not defined enough
- Cheekbones: Not defined
- Eye area: Under-eye bags
- Skin: Acne
- Facial symmetry: Overall imbalance
- Eye area: Dark circles
- Jawline: Too round
- Hair: style does not suit face shape
- Facial symmetry: Uneven jaw
- Skin: Oily
What holds people back
The biggest problem is not motivation. 65% say they do not know what to do, and 52% say they find it hard to stay consistent.
This is the gap Lookist is built for. Your scan shows which of the 15 features pull your score down, with a written note on each. Then a daily plan gives you a short list of steps for those features, so you know what to do today.
Do men and women score differently?
Not much. Men averaged 5.6 (n = 283) and women averaged 5.6 (n = 29). Both groups have a median of 5.4. The women's sample is small, so read that number with care. Each scan is scored against references for the person's gender, so these are not head-to-head comparisons.
How we made these numbers
- Scores. The first completed scan of each of 312 people in the Lookist iPhone app, from September 7, 2026 to November 2, 2026. The score charts use one scan per person. The 803 scans in the window include rescans.
- Why this window. Lookist changed how it scores faces in early September 2026. We use only scans made after that change, so every score comes from the same method.
- How a scan works. One front photo. The scan rates 15 features from 0 to 10 against references for the person's gender and gives an overall score from 0 to 10.
- Answers. Worries, goals, wanted scores and obstacles come from 1,100 onboarding answers from April 13 to November 2, 2026. Some questions were added later, so their n is smaller. Self ratings are matched to the same people's first scan.
- Privacy. This page shows totals only. No photos, names, ages or single scans. We do not show any group with fewer than 20 people.
- Limits. These are people who chose to scan their face in a looks app, and 85% of the answers came from men. They are not a sample of everyone. A score describes one photo, and light, angle and distance can move it.
