What is looksmaxxing? Meaning, origin, and what actually works
Looksmaxxing means trying to make yourself look as attractive as you can. The word started on online forums in the 2010s and spread on TikTok in the 2020s. It covers two very different things. Softmaxxing means skin care, a better haircut, fitness and sleep. Hardmaxxing means surgery, drugs and risky DIY tricks. The soft side has real evidence. Much of the hard side does not.

Looksmaxxing is slang for maximizing your looks. 'Looks' is your appearance. 'Maxxing' is short for maximizing, with a double x that marks it as internet slang. A looksmaxxer is a person who does it.
You will see the word spelled many ways: looksmaxxing, looksmaxing, looks maxxing, lookmaxxing, or just looksmax. They all mean the same thing. Most people use it as a verb, as in 'I'm trying to looksmax before summer.'
In practice the word covers a huge range. At one end it is a guy who starts using sunscreen and gets a better haircut. At the other end it is someone who talks about hitting his own face to change his bones. Knowing which end a piece of advice comes from is most of the skill.
Where did looksmaxxing come from?
The word came from incel and manosphere forums in the 2010s. Three forums (PUAHate, Sluthate and Lookism.net) gave the 'PSL' community its name and its 1 to 8 rating scale. An Incel Wiki article dated May 26, 2014 traces the term to those forums. A 4chan post from November 2015 already used it casually.
Mainstream coverage came later. HuffPost wrote about forum looksmaxxing in July 2018. Business Insider tried 'softmaxxing' for an article in November 2023. The BBC ran a long feature in March 2024. It said the trend had 'existed for at least a decade', and that TikTok had redefined it for teenage boys.
By 2026 it was national news. NPR, The Guardian and The New York Times covered the streamer Braden Peters, known as Clavicular. Coverage ties him to the more extreme side of the trend. In May 2026, NPR reported that child psychiatrists saw more boys take risks with their bodies for looksmaxxing.

How did looksmaxxing get so big on TikTok?
Jokes about looksmaxxing and mogging started to appear on Instagram and Twitter around 2021. TikTok then turned them into a format: a 'before' clip, a 'glow up' montage, and a list of tips. Short videos rewarded strong claims and simple numbers, and looksmaxxing had both.
The language spread faster than the forums ever could. Linguist Adam Aleksic polled students at Georgetown in March 2024 and found about 40 percent knew the terms. Two months later at Stanford, it was about 80 percent. Most people now use the words with no idea where they came from.
Today the term means different things to different people. For many teens it just means 'glow up', with a bit of irony. For a smaller group it still carries the forum belief that your face decides your whole life. This guide covers the useful part and is honest about the rest.

What is softmaxxing vs hardmaxxing?
Softmaxxing means low-risk changes you can do yourself. Think skin care, a haircut that suits your face, fat loss, muscle, sleep, grooming and clothes. Hardmaxxing means big or risky changes. Think cosmetic surgery, hair transplants, steroids, crash diets and DIY tricks like bonesmashing.
The line matters because the evidence is on the soft side. A dermatologist can tell you how long acne treatment takes. Nobody can tell you that hitting your cheekbones makes them grow. The table below sorts common methods by what the evidence says.
| Method | Type | Evidence level | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily sunscreen | Soft | Strong | Dermatologists advise broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin. |
| Acne treatment | Soft | Strong | Stick with one treatment. It can take several weeks to a few months to see a change. |
| Haircut for your face shape | Soft | Practical | Changes how your face reads the same day. |
| Losing body fat | Soft | Strong | Fat loss shows across your whole body, face included. Spot work does not target the face. |
| Strength training | Soft | Strong | Changes your frame and posture over months, not days. |
| Sleep (7+ hours for adults) | Soft | Strong for health | Sleep experts set 7 hours or more for adults and 8 to 10 for teens. |
| Mewing | Soft | Weak | Orthodontists say there is no good evidence it reshapes an adult jaw. |
| Bonesmashing | Hard | None | No evidence it works. It risks fractures, bruising and nerve damage. |
| Steroids and 'bodybuilding' pills | Hard | Risky | The FDA has found hidden steroids in products sold as supplements. |
| Cosmetic surgery | Hard | Varies by procedure | A medical decision for an adult with a board-certified surgeon. |

What are the common looksmaxxing terms?
Looksmaxxing comes with its own vocabulary. You do not need all of it, but a few words show up in almost every video and comment section.
- Mogging: looking better than someone next to you. 'He mogs his friends.'
- PSL: a 1 to 8 face rating scale from the forums, with tiers like LTN, MTN, HTN and Chadlite.
- Hunter eyes: deep-set eyes with a slight upward tilt and low brows.
- Canthal tilt: the angle between the inner and outer corners of the eye.
- Mewing: holding the tongue flat on the roof of the mouth.
- Glow up: a visible improvement over time. Often used as a softer word for looksmaxxing.
- Ascend: to move up a tier on a rating scale.

What actually helps your looks?
The boring stuff works, and it works for almost everyone. Clear skin, a haircut that fits your face, lower body fat, decent posture and enough sleep all show. They change how you look in photos and in person. None of it is secret forum knowledge.
Skin is the fastest visible win for most teens. Use a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and sunscreen. If you have acne, pick one proven treatment and give it time. The American Academy of Dermatology says it can take several weeks to a few months to see a difference. It also says picking spots makes them last longer.
Body fat changes the face more than most face tricks. Your face gets leaner when your whole body does. The NHS baseline is 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. Add strength work on at least 2 days. Pair that with food you can stick to, not a crash diet.
Hair, grooming and photos round it out. A barber who looks at your face shape before cutting beats any product. Trimmed brows and a clean beard line matter. And a good photo setup can change how you look on camera more than a month of tips.

Which looksmaxxing trends are risky or useless?
Some of the most viral methods have no evidence behind them, and a few can hurt you. Here is the honest read on the big ones.
Does bonesmashing work?
No. Bonesmashing means hitting your face with a hammer or a hard object. The belief is that the bone will heal bigger. There is no evidence for it.
A 2025 study of a large looksmaxxing forum found users who discussed it. The authors listed the real outcomes: bleeding, bruising and soft tissue damage. Surgeons also warn about fractures and nerve or eye injury.
Many forum users treat it as a joke. That does not make it safe for the people who try it.
Does mewing change your jaw?
Not in any way that has been shown. The American Association of Orthodontists says the evidence for mewing's jawline claims is very thin. Good tongue posture is fine. Expecting it to rebuild an adult jaw is not.
Is extreme dieting worth it for a sharper face?
No. Starving yourself for 'hollow cheeks' looks a lot like an eating disorder. Experts quoted by the BBC and PBS make that link directly. The National Institute of Mental Health lists eating disorders as serious illnesses that affect men too. A steady, moderate fat loss gets the same face change without the damage.
What about pills, peptides and steroids?
The FDA has found that some 'bodybuilding' products sold as supplements contain hidden steroids. It links them to liver injury, severe acne, hair loss, mood changes and, in rare cases, heart attack and stroke. Severe acne and hair loss are the opposite of what a looksmaxxer wants.
Is looksmaxxing bad for your mental health?
It can be, and it is worth one straight paragraph. Looksmaxxing turns your face into a number, and a number always has someone above it. A 2025 study read 8,072 comments on a big looksmaxxing forum. Users rated each other harshly and pushed each other toward harmful changes.
Wanting to look better is normal. The warning signs are different. Watch for hours at the mirror, avoiding photos and people, feeling that one feature ruins everything, or skipping meals. The NHS lists these as signs of body dysmorphic disorder, and it is treatable. If that sounds like you, talk to a doctor or someone you trust.
A good rule: use looksmaxxing for things you control and that also make you healthier. Skin, sleep, fitness and grooming pass that test. Bone shape and height do not.
How do people track looksmaxxing progress?
Most people track progress with photos. The trick is to take them the same way each time: same distance, same light, same angle, no filter. A close selfie and a photo from across the room can make the same face look different.
Others use face ratings, either from forum users or from apps and web tools. Treat any rating as a reading of one photo, not a verdict on you. The useful part is the detail: which feature scored lower, and why.
- Pick one spot with soft front light, like facing a window.
- Hold the phone at eye level, at arm's length or on a stand.
- Take a neutral front photo with no filter and your hair off your face.
- Repeat the same setup every 2 to 4 weeks.
- Compare the photos side by side before you compare any score.
How does Lookist fit into looksmaxxing?
Lookist is an iPhone app for the soft side of looksmaxxing. You take one front photo. You get an overall score out of 10 and 15 feature scores, each with a written note. The features include symmetry, facial harmony, jawline, eyes, skin clarity, skin texture and hair.
From those results, Lookist builds a daily glow-up plan. It follows the goals you pick: jawline, skin, facial harmony or overall glow up. The plan covers skin care, gentle hair care and sleep reminders. Scan history lets you compare past scans over time. The percentile chart shows where a score sits among other Lookist scans.
It works for men and women. Want to see a new cut before you book a barber? The Hairstyle Tester puts styles on your own photo.
