On those forums, maxxing was about raising 'sexual market value'. Users listed looksmaxxing, moneymaxxing and statusmaxxing as ways to do it. A linguist later traced the path in Topics in Linguistics. 'Maximize' became 'max', then 'maxx', then a suffix with its own meaning.

How did maxxing spread beyond looks?
Jokes using the suffix spread on Twitter in late 2021, with a meme format called 'You Need To Be X-Maxxing'. By late 2023 it was trending on TikTok. Dazed called 2024 'the year of maxxing'. The American Dialect Society nominated '-maxxing' as the most creative word of 2024.
Then it went fully mainstream. In October 2025, The New York Times Magazine's language column called it the suffix that tells us to optimize everything. The Times also asked 'Should you be fibermaxxing?' In February 2026 a U.S. Department of Defense account posted 'lethalitymaxxing'. In June 2026 a UK cabinet minister used 'Britmaxxing'.
Linguist Adam Aleksic said most Gen Z speakers use it ironically, often with no idea of its forum origins. That's why the same word can show up on a government account and in your group chat.
