Facial harmony vs. symmetry: what is the difference?

In Lookist, facial symmetry describes the balance between the two sides of a face in a photo. Facial harmony describes the overall balance of its proportions. They answer different questions, so the scores can differ. Both are appearance estimates from the submitted image. Neither is a clinical measurement or a universal definition of beauty.

What does facial symmetry describe?

Symmetry concerns how the left and right sides relate in the image. This is a question about side-to-side balance. It is different from asking how large one feature appears relative to the whole face.

A turned head makes the two sides appear different in size and visibility. Uneven light can make that comparison harder to read. Check the image before treating a score difference as a change in your face.

What does facial harmony describe?

Lookist uses facial harmony for the overall appearance of proportions. The question is how the visible features relate to each other in the image. It does not ask only whether the two sides match.

Consider two drawings with matching left and right sides. One can have a longer lower section than the other. Both drawings can be symmetrical while their overall proportions differ. This example explains the distinction. It does not define an ideal face.

Lookist lists harmony separately from scores for the eyes, nose, lips, jawline, and other features. Read its explanation alongside the rest of the report.

Why are my harmony and symmetry scores different?

The labels describe different aspects of the photo. There is no reason to expect identical numbers. A difference between them does not, by itself, mean that the report contains an error.

Start with the written explanation for each score. Then check camera position, framing, light, and expression. If those conditions differ between reports, the scores do not form a controlled comparison.

The same label in another app may also use a different scale or method. We have not established a shared calibration between Lookist and other rating systems.

How should I use the two scores?

Use them to find explanations you want to read, then return to your original goal. If you want a clearer photo record, improve the consistency of the setup. If you want help with daily care, review the proposed tasks.

A harmony score does not prescribe a procedure. A symmetry score does not tell you to reshape your jaw. Lookist's basic care plans and task records serve a separate purpose from the appearance report.
